Swarthmore College students sing during a sit-in at the Phi Psi fraternity house, in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. Organized by a campus group called the Coalition to End Fraternity Violence, the sit-ins — which garnered national press attention — were the culmination of weeks of tension between many Swarthmore students and the members of the two remaining fraternities on campus, Phi Psi and Delta Epsilon, which the student activists argue are bastions of toxic male behavior. We are disgusted to read details surrounding their racism, misogyny, homophobia, and stand in support of the sexual assault survivors. The activists are calling for Swarthmore to, among other things, terminate its lease for fraternity houses and ban both Phi Psi and Delta Epsilon from campus. In March, a Tumblr called Swat Fraternities surfaced, garnering dozens of submissions from Swarthmore students alleging having witnessed or been subject to racist, misogynistic, and abusive behavior at the frats. All our current brothers were in high school and middle school at the time of these unofficial minutes, and none of us would have joined the organization had this been the standard when we arrived at Swarthmore. Following weeks of protest and demands to meet with senior campus administration officials, student activists stormed the Phi Psi house on Saturday, where almost students have joined the protestors at the peak of the action, according to Haddad.
For the purposes of this document, the only consensual romantic or sexual relationships under consideration are those that occur when one of the participants is in an evaluative or supervisory position over the other. Such relationships can present serious ethical concerns about issues such as the validity of consent, conflicts of interest between personal and professional concerns, and unfair treatment of others.
Power imbalances between individuals holding different positions at the College complicate such relationships. These relationships have the potential for negative reverberations that affect not only the individual participants, but also third parties and the climate of the community as a whole, and thus can undermine the trust and integrity that are essential to teaching, learning, and working at the College.
The primary objective of Swarthmore College in addressing the topic of consensual relations is to maintain the integrity of the academic process and to maintain a positive work environment.

Even though I am pretty introverted, I do like going out with a small group of friends. I don’t drink or do drugs, so would that limit my social life I know this is kinda silly, but what’s the dating scene like? I’m straight I’ve heard that heterosexual dating is also pretty limited, and that there’s a lot of competition between Haverford girls and Bryn Mawr girls for guys.
I would like to have a long term relationship in college, or at least have opportunities to date.

The Swarthmore experience is unlike that of any other college, which is perhaps best illustrated by its eclectic campus traditions. An integral part of our Quaker heritage, First Collection is unlike any other tradition at Swarthmore. The weekend before fall classes begin, students flock to Parrish Beach for the annual showing of this movie classic. The meter race through shallow waters itself is unappealing; what makes the Regatta a worthwhile event is the variety of floating devices that students design to dominate the fierce waters of the 3-foot-deep creek.
Halloween is far from frightful at Swarthmore! Off-and-on since the s, Mary Lyon dormitory has opened its doors to all students for a night of music, food, games, and other treats. During the last night of reading week at the end of the semester, Swatties gather in Sharples to vent.
After a late-night snack of breakfast food, served by faculty and staff members, students drop what they are doing to join a rage-filled scream at the stroke of midnight. Swatties go glam for this annual event, usually held in late January. Past themes have included a masquerade party, casino night, and a Harry Potter-esque Yule Ball.

Activists in the building say that it is the site of rampant sexual violence. The students have refused to leave until college administrators meet their demands: disband the fraternities and take away the two campus buildings that they lease to the groups. The demonstration also comes after documents leaked to student journalists, purportedly chronicling years of bigotry and sexual assaults by one fraternity, Phi Psi, whose house the students have seized.
Even the existence of fraternities at Swarthmore might surprise outsiders.

Swarthmore College, a prestigious small liberal arts college near Philadelphia, recently announced that they are need-blind for all undocumented students including students without DACA! We encourage all students, regardless of citizenship status or national origin, to apply to the College. We do not take financial need or application for financial aid into account when making an admissions decision.
We believe all students should be able to afford a Swarthmore education regardless of socioeconomic status or ability to pay. This policy pertains to incoming freshmen, transfer students, and students who live all over the country. Transfer students can still apply this year since their admission deadline is April 1 st. Swarthmore has had this policy for a few years, but they are making it public so all qualified undocumented students and their advisers are aware of this policy.
The admissions office advises students to share your story with them in your application so they understand your context. I remember that applying for college was one of the most terrifying things I have ever done. Coming from a low-income family, I knew that I would only be able to go to college if I got a significant amount of financial aid. That seemed impossible as an undocumented student and I wish someone would have told me that this was something I could do.

Reflections on Disturbing Campus News
Washington, D. Senator Bob Casey D-PA , primary author of the Campus SaVE Act, which was enacted as a part of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of , is pressing colleges and universities in the Commonwealth to ensure that they have adequate policies in place to prevent campus sexual assault. I am deeply concerned by recent student protests at Swarthmore College that indicate how much work remains to ensure that every student has a safe learning environment.
Institutions of higher education need to be places where students can learn and grow without fear. That means that school administrators need to work with students to create a culture of safety and accountability, through ongoing efforts and not just in response to a crisis.

The name “Swarthmore” has its roots in early Quaker history. In England , Swarthmoor Hall near the town of Ulverston , Cumbria , previously in Lancashire was the home of Thomas and Margaret Fell in when George Fox , — , fresh from his epiphany atop Pendle Hill in , came to visit. The visitation turned into a long association, as Fox persuaded Thomas and Margaret Fell of his views. Swarthmoor was used for the first meetings of what became known as the Religious Society of Friends later colloquially labeled “The Quakers”.
